How Closely Does Your Diet Connect To Your Oral Health?

The acids in the bacterial plaque that covers our teeth eat away at our tooth enamel and cause decay. Tooth enamel is a hard protective coating that keeps bacteria at bay, without it the inner layers of our teeth which are not nearly as resistant are open to infection. When you look at it from this perspective it makes sense that the foods and drinks that you put in your mouth make a difference when it comes to the maintenance of your oral health.

Bacterial plaque feeds on sugars and starches so if you limit your intake you limit the deterioration of your tooth enamel. What kinds of foods should you be eating instead? It may come as no surprise that dairy products are at the top of a list of foods that are good for your teeth. Milk, yogurt, and cheese are all good sources of the calcium that is known to strengthen tooth enamel. Most foods will contain some trace of natural sugar but it’s the amount of added sugar in soft drinks and fruit juices, for instance, that is so unhealthy. The content should be printed on the packaging label so that you can see how much-added sugar you are getting from the product.
