We All Need Protection

An in-office fluoride treatment is commonly thought of as a procedure for a child who is particularly cavity prone but fluoride protects against tooth decay at any age. It also works to relieve acute tooth sensitivity. Tooth sensitivity increases when the protective coating of enamel starts to deteriorate or when gum tissue starts to separate from the teeth.

Either way, the more sensitive layers of the inner teeth are exposed. At this point any sensations of extreme hot or cold will be intensified. In order to be able to continue to enjoy some of your favorite foods and drinks you will need to take extra precautions.

A fluoride treatment can come in the form of a gel which is brushed directly onto the surface of your teeth. Restorative bonding is an alternative method in which a tooth colored material is used to seal off the inner tooth. A highly concentrated fluoride foam is another option. It is contained in a mouth tray that you will wear for several minutes while it works to strengthen your tooth enamel. Your dentist can recommend the procedure that will be most suited to your needs.

Follow up your treatment by brushing as usual with a soft bristle toothbrush using a prescription strength fluoride toothpaste. Dentists and hygienists often recommend letting a trace of the high formula paste remain on your teeth overnight for extended protection.
