What to Do If Your Veneer Falls Off

Dental veneers are durable cosmetic restorations designed to improve the appearance of teeth by covering chips, stains, gaps, or uneven shapes. Although veneers are strong and long-lasting, they can occasionally become loose or fall off due to wear, injury, teeth grinding, or bonding issues. If your veneer falls off, it can feel alarming, especially if the affected tooth is highly visible. Fortunately, staying calm and taking the right steps can help protect your tooth until you see your dentist.

Stay Calm and Find the Veneer

The first thing to do is carefully locate the veneer if possible. Porcelain veneers are custom-made and may sometimes be reattached if they are still intact and undamaged.

Handle the veneer gently and store it in a clean container to avoid breaking or losing it. Avoid wrapping it loosely in tissue, where it could accidentally be thrown away.

Do Not Try to Glue It Back Yourself

It may be tempting to use household glue or over-the-counter adhesives to reattach the veneer, but this should be avoided. Regular adhesives are not safe for use inside the mouth and can damage both the veneer and the natural tooth.

Improperly reattaching a veneer can also make professional repair more difficult. Only a dentist should use the specialized dental materials required for secure bonding.

Protect the Exposed Tooth

After a veneer falls off, the underlying tooth may feel rough, sensitive, or uncomfortable. This is because a small amount of enamel is usually removed during veneer preparation.

Until you can visit your dentist, try to avoid:

  • Very hot or cold foods and drinks.
  • Hard or crunchy foods.
  • Sticky foods.
  • Biting directly on the affected tooth.

If the exposed tooth feels sharp, dental wax from a pharmacy may temporarily help protect your mouth from irritation.

Contact Your Dentist Promptly

Schedule a dental appointment as soon as possible after the veneer comes off. In many cases, the veneer can simply be cleaned and re-bonded if it remains in good condition.

However, if the veneer is cracked, damaged, or no longer fits properly, your dentist may recommend replacing it with a new one.

During the appointment, the dentist will examine both the veneer and the underlying tooth to determine the best solution.

Why Veneers May Fall Off

Several factors can contribute to a veneer becoming loose, including:

  • Teeth grinding or clenching.
  • Trauma or injury.
  • Biting hard objects.
  • Decay underneath the veneer.
  • Weakening of the bonding material over time.

Practicing good oral hygiene and wearing a nightguard if you grind your teeth can help extend the life of your veneers.

A fallen veneer is not usually a dental emergency, but it should still be addressed promptly. Avoid trying to repair it yourself, protect the exposed tooth, and contact your dentist for professional care. With quick treatment, your smile can often be restored comfortably and naturally in a short amount of time.
