Why Do My Dentures Smell Bad?

Though they aren’t your “real” teeth, dentures look, feel, and act just like natural teeth. They help you chew; they help you speak, and they help maintain the structure of your jawbones. Thus, to properly care for your dentures, you must give them the same attention as you might with your natural teeth. While you may not think neglecting your dentures really matters since they are “fake,” failure to care for them can cause bad odors and even damage. Here are a few reasons they may not smell too good, and what you can do to fix them!

Possible Causes of Denture Odor

When you wear dentures to speak and chew, they can become coated in saliva, food particles, and even plaque. This debris can even get stuck between the teeth or get caught in your adhesive. If you smoke, your dentures can absorb that odor, causing them to smell bad no matter how often or carefully you clean them.

How To Stop Denture Odor

If you have dentures, you should brush them regularly just like you would your natural teeth. Brushing them removes debris and keeps them from staining and from developing an unpleasant odor.

Another step you should not neglect is flossing them. Flossing removes small particles that get stuck between the teeth, so there is nothing trapped there to make them smell.

Also, be sure to remove your dentures each night before bed and leave them soaking in a glass of water or soak. This not only prevents them from drying out and becoming permanently damaged, but it also helps keep them clean and smell fresh.

Dental Checkups

Finally, even if you have a full set of dentures, don’t skip your semi-annual dental checkups. Your dentist can make sure they fit properly, are not damaged, are clean, and that all of your crowns are secure. If during your appointment there is any damage observed, your dentist can send them for repair or help you order a new pair.

Remember, dentures should not have an odor, so if something smells bad, there is likely something wrong. Thorough, proper cleaning can help ensure that they last long and remain free of stains, damage, and unpleasant odors.
