4 Signs You Should Consider a Dental Filling

In modern dentistry, the humble filling is one of the most common and efficient treatments around. They can repair and restore teeth affected by minor to moderate decay or damage, helping to preserve your pearly whites and your confident smile. But how do you know when it’s time to consider a dental filling?

If you’re unsure about whether or not you need a dental filling, continue reading. Below are four signs you may be dealing with some tooth decay that will require a filling.

1. Toothache or Sensitivity

Persistent toothache or sensitivity, especially when consuming hot or cold foods and beverages, is often a sign of tooth decay. If you experience discomfort when biting down or pressure sensitivity, the decay could have progressed to a point where a filling is necessary, if not a more thorough treatment.

2. Small Brown Flecks or Pits on Your Teeth

Sometimes, you can see the damage on the surface of your enamel. If you notice visible holes, pits, or dark spots on your teeth, it’s a good indication of tooth decay. Dental fillings can restore the integrity of the tooth and prevent the decay from progressing further. This is why it’s important to examine yourself frequently.

3. Sharp Edges or Roughness Between Teeth

When your tongue catches on rough or sharp edges, or if your floss frays between your teeth, it’s a sign that something is amiss. This roughness can result from tooth wear, grinding, decay, or minor fractures.

4. Strange Discoloration

The earliest sign of tooth decay is a white spot on the surface of your enamel. As acid is released from bacterial plaque, it begins to “etch” your teeth, making small weak points.

As decay progresses, these spots may turn brown or black on the enamel, or even under the surface if the decay has spread. While some stains can be addressed by brushing your teeth, discoloration that results from decay may require a dental filling to restore its appearance and function.

If you experience any of these signs, don’t delay seeking dental care. Your dentist will evaluate your condition, discuss appropriate treatment options, and recommend a dental filling to restore your tooth if necessary. For now, prioritize preventive care and continue maintaining your oral hygiene for a healthy and confident smile.
