While essential\ntrips like grocery shopping, pharmacy visits, and medical emergencies are the\nmost notable exceptions, it can be difficult to know when an emergency dental\nvisit is warranted. According to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.compassdentalga.com\/emergency-dentistry.html\">emergency dentist\nin Savannah<\/a>, here\u2019s what you need to know regarding dental emergencies\nwhile under quarantine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Considered a Dental Emergency?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the American Dental Association (ADA), dental\nemergencies \u201care potentially life threatening and require immediate treatment\nto stop ongoing tissue bleeding [or to] alleviate severe pain or infection.\u201d These\nare considered to be the most serious forms of dental issues that can occur and\ninclude but are not limited to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Uncontrolled bleeding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Soft tissue bacterial infections with intraoral<br>or extraoral swelling that potentially compromise the airway<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trauma involving facial bones that potentially compromise<br>the airway<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With that said, the ADA has also classified dental issues\ninto a category called \u201durgent dental care.\u201d This \u201cfocuses on the management of\nconditions that require immediate attention to relieve severe pain and\/or risk\nof infection.\u201d Seeing a dentist for these issues, rather than an emergency\nroom, works to reduce the burden that many hospital departments are already experiencing\ndue to COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, urgent dental care treatments refer to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Third-molar pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pain as a result of dry socket<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Severe dental pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tooth fracture that causes pain or soft tissue<br>trauma<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Knocked-out teeth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oral bacterial infections or abscesses that<br>cause pain and swelling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lost or broken restorations that result in gum<br>irritation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is NOT Considered a Dental Emergency?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With dental emergencies and urgent dental care in mind, the\nADA has also noted which dental issues can wait longer to be addressed. Keep in\nmind that a dentist will use their best judgement based on your current symptoms\nto determine if an emergency appointment is the most appropriate action. It\u2019s\nimportant that you call the dentist regardless of whether you think it\u2019s a\ndental emergency or not. However, it\u2019s also important to stay calm in the event\nthe dentist tells you that your concern can wait a few days before being handled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nonemergency dental procedures refer to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Routine oral examinations or recall visits, including<br>X-rays<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dental cleanings and preventive therapies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Orthodontic procedures that don\u2019t address pain, infection<br>or trauma<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Removal of teeth that carry no immediate concerns<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cosmetic dentistry (i.e. teeth whitening,<br>cosmetic bonding, porcelain veneers, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restorative dentistry, such as for cavities with<br>no serious symptoms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can You Reduce Your Risk?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To reduce your risk for experiencing dental emergencies, it\u2019s\ncrucial that you practice the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Brush twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Floss daily<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid using your teeth as a tool (whether it\u2019s to<br>open packages or bottles)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Always use a mouthguard when playing contact<br>sports<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chew food carefully and make sure to avoid hard<br>foods like popcorn kernels, nuts, toffee, ice cubes, and hard candy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear a nightguard if you suffer from chronic<br>teeth grinding and clenching<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With the right tips in mind, you too can avoid a dental emergency.\nHowever, if one does appear, don\u2019t be afraid to call a dentist today for\nguidance!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the Author<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Charles Fana has been serving the community of Savannah for decades.
