TMD is caused by irritation, inflammation,\nor injury to the TMJ. Usually, it occurs as a result of unmanaged stress, but\nthere are multiple things that can contribute to the TMD. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common Causes of TMD <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While the exact causes of TMJ disorder are not completely\nunderstood, there are several contributing factors, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Trauma to the teeth and jaw <\/li><li>Malocclusion (bite alignment issues) <\/li><li>Poor posture <\/li><li>Bruxism (teeth grinding) <\/li><li>Poorly managed stress or anxiety <\/li><li>Excessive gum chewing <\/li><li>Arthritis <\/li><li>Wearing orthodontic braces <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Risk Factors for TMD <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several risk factors for TMD, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Having poor posture that puts strain on the neck\nand back muscles <\/li><li>Stress causing you to clench your jaw or grind\nyour teeth <\/li><li>Being female aged 18-44 <\/li><li>Having chronic inflammatory arthritis <\/li><li>Having jaw trauma or poorly positioned teeth <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Symptoms of TMD <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let your dentist know if you experience any of the following\nsymptoms, as you could need TMD therapy in Savannah:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Pain or tenderness in the jaw area <\/li><li>Clicking sound when opening or closing your\nmouth <\/li><li>Ear pain or hearing cracking sounds in your ears\n<\/li><li>Pain that feels like a toothache in your back\nteeth <\/li><li>Headaches and migraines <\/li><li>Popping or ringing sounds in the ears <\/li><li>Sore, tight, or stiff neck or jaw muscles <\/li><li>Muscle spasms in the jaw <\/li><li>Lockjaw making it difficult to open or close\nyour mouth all the way <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have any of the symptoms listed above, you should tell\nyour dentist right away. They can prescribe treatment that takes some of the\npressure off of your jaw or even gently shifts your jaw into a new, better\naligned position. In addition, they may suggest Botox injections to relax the\njaw muscles, so you don\u2019t grind or clench your teeth while you sleep.
